Wife found a pickup Empty Wife found a pickup

Post by spartman Sat Oct 15, 2011 8:00 pm

Wife told me about a truck thats for sale here in town.

Guess its a one owner Dodge truck.

Its a 1980 D150 2wd. Has a straight 6 and the 727 tranny. Little bit of rust from what I understand.

Havent really looked at it but I guess the guy only wants 300 for it.

Im thinking that if its not rusted off the frame it would be worth it to get.

Also how would this handle in the snow?

Im sure the 80 chevy with 4x4 would be a bit better, but Id be willing to drive this instead for the price.

What do you guys think, and is there something to look for on these dodges?

i don't know much about that particular model--i do know that, given the price of parts nowdays, that 300 can turn into 1000 very quickly -- other than that, it's the same old crap shoot--the engine and trans are time proven to be reliable--i am a firm believer in the older stuff without electronics and all the electric stuff--windows, locks etc...

it has a body style about as aerodynamic as an international

as far as snow goes--lotsa weight in the bed and some good mud & snow tires will get you most anywhere--4wd just ensures that when u get stuck, you are really stuck Wife found a pickup 301330

Like Jd I don't know that model but if it runs it worth it. $300 is half of one new truck payment. If it only lasts 3000 miles thats .10 a mile. We never had 4x4 growing up and went every place with some weight and mud grips. We used to put a old topper on our trucks in the winter and store fire wood in them. The wood stayed dry and we had weight. JD I never put my 4x4 into 4x4 until I stick when off road. Then I get out of there. I think I have only used my winch once pulling me out. I always use it for recovery of other people. Get the Dodge Spartman, its about as tough an old truck as anyone made.

I'm still pissed the x made me sell the highboy I got from matt in the divorce. That would have been sweet with CJ's 390 in it.

cj--she'll get her's--karma has a way of making sure of that

spart--yep--u can scrap it for 3 bills--i would go see it and then decide--right now i have taken 300 bux worth of parts off a 300 dollar truck & i ain't hardly touched it--rear brakes and drums-wheel cylinders--gonna swap the whole rearend soon, mainly for the springs--the way i see it, i have 2000 or 3000 dollars worth in the bank--also a couple of skinny minny spokes that are gonna go on the 72--so make that 450 or 500

Did drive by it on the way home this afternoon with the wife.

The body is pretty straight on it, has a couple of cancer holes, and a bunch of spot rust over the sides, but otherwise she looks good.

Will need a set of rear tires minimum, they would be good enough for summer, but not for winter.

See what I can get done with her.

The slant 6 should be damnear indestructible, and the 727 auto is a good one Ive heard.

Sounds like a decent deal to me, it would go across the scales for 3 bills. Not the best for winter but put 600# or so right over and a little ahead of the axle and it will do fine, a posi is a real plus on a 2wd.

The old slant hemi is a good little engine. A lot of them sound like a typewriter cause most people didn't realize they are a solid lifter motor. Along with cars and trucks a lot of them were used in forklifts. Yale I think was big on them but other outfits used them also.
