I found an old J3 sitting in a hanger. I haven't been over to it yet but the owner said he parked it because it needed fabric and it hasn't been flow in 10-15 years (probably more like 20-25 considering the way old farts remember the passage of time) If it even has a log book and considering it would need fabric, all the AD's and probably a major (65 horse I assume) What kind of value does it have?

He thinks it's worth 10 and there is no log book. So I'm thinking after you do all the AD's, tear down the engine and maybe rebuild it, new fabric and do all the stuff it needs (basically a total restoration) you could spend $60,000 and have a $45,000 airplane. I'm thinking 5 might be a better price.

Re: Hey John, airplane question
Sorry JB..internet was down here for a couple days. Yep, you're right on the money with figuring 5....I'd say 5 to 7..... there's LOTS of work to be done there. I just built a new fuselage (almost all new...just saved from the back seat forward and below) and I was in it about $14,000 for my time and materials... fabric is going to be around $5-8000... engine would run around $5+.....New lower cowl (damned cows LOVE those things!) tires, brakes, most likely needs new spars in the wings, etc.. it all adds up and he still has no logs.... with the Feds, paperwork is EVERYTHING!
It'd be a good one for 5. I wouldn't go over that though..the market sucks right now!

Those wings have spruce spars? I guess I didn't even think of tha.
I don't have the money to mess with it and with him thinking 10 it'll be there a while, probably until his estate auction when he croaks. With no books it might be best parted out.

Re: Hey John, airplane question
As long as there's data plates on the airframe and engine, it can be brought back... but it's a pain. It's definately a total rebuild of everything. I don't blame ya for passing.... like I said, the market's soft right now... my Supercub project went from a $15000 pile of paperwork and parts, to a $5000 pile of paperwork and parts.... finished product went from almost $75000, to about half that.... doesn't leave much room for any profit.
