More cars and stuff

Bought a 63 Chevy pickup last Sunday, drove it home, took a few pics and threw it on C-list. Sold it 45 minutes later, doubled my money.
This week I made an offer on a 66 Toronado and ended up with it for $700. They say it just needs a freeze plug and a fuel pump, we'll see. I'll try the quick flip and meanwhile see if I can get it running. It would be kinda fun to keep. Flat charcoal paint with no chrome, dark windows, dropped a couple inches. Kind of the evil Torosaurus like something from MadMax.
Also scored a free 87 F250 4x4 Supercab a while back, just got the title. Carbed 460 C6. Needs the tranny gone through. My buddy from the Ford/Dodge store told me he would do it if I got it pulled. Kit is like $125. Pretty decent old truck from the desert in Cali. Paint oxidized but zero rust and nice interior, almost new 33x12.50x16s.

Bought a 149 Cub Cadet a while back. 14 hp Kohler with hydro, also hydraulic lift on the deck and a front mounted angle dozer. Paid 4 bills for it, should be worth at least double that in the spring.Also a free Ranch King with 18 horse Briggs twin this week, just needs one deck spindle, battery and usual stuff from sitting.
I think that makes 7 or 8 riding mower/garden tractors that run now and at least that many non runners.

It's been a great year for horse tradin, lots of money around these parts with the coal to the west and oil to the north. Ifn I was 15 years younger I'd head to North Dakota, not much trouble to knock down over 100G a year up there. Lots of those guys are takin home $3500 a week. Good $$ that trickles down.

Its been a good week for mobile home/rv central heat repair here.
Repaired 4 so far and made my whole Jan. bills so far

Marcellus shale money around here. Dealer is selling new Peterbilts like cold drinks at a county fair. Lots of work for anybody involved in any way. Last Monday we got 4 new model 389 tractors that were ordered for stock. Double frames, 600hp Cummins, big drivelines, heavy haulers with all the bells and whistles. One was sold before it hit the ground. 2 more were sold before they hit the front line. As of Thursday at 3:30 a customer was enroute to look at the 4th one. These suckers list for around $180k.

Dont need a power stroke or duramax, just looking for an older diesel, for a project.

Would even consider one of the 350 diesels if the price was right.

My nephew has 8 or 10 of those military 6.2s in the crates. I'm not sure what he has into them but I'd bet he'd sell one. I do know of a Datsun diesel 4x4 with no title but that guy seldom sells anything. He also has a 6.9 Ford 4x4 with low miles engine that he would take $650 for. I had a 2wd Datsun diesel last fall. It had hit a deer but ran good still, sold it for 5 bills.
Keep an eye on school auctions, or when they advertise and seel outright. Sometimes you can get an old diesel school bus for cheap. Some had Navstar engine, some DT466. I've seen those old Bluebirds with 5.9 Cummins go for dirt cheap, especially if they have bad brakes, a tranny out or other issues. I could have bought 3 of them for $1500 when I was in Texas and 2 of them you could drive home. We gave away 3 running GMC school buses that had some kind of little Detroit V8

Seems to be quite a few of those older Bluebird busses coming onto the market lately. Rust issues are taking their toll around here. Same with the Harvesters. If you find the right deal you can pick up a bus with a 5.9 Cummins or a T444E ( International's name for a Powerstroke ) pretty cheap. I've also seen several of them with DT466's , both mechanical and electronic controlled versions up for grabs.

JB, that little Detroit is called an 8.2 Fuelpincher. The 8.2 litre was Detroit's first 4 cycle diesel. They were meant to compete with a 3208 Cat. They tended to be breakage prone and they're a PITA to work on. Other than a few older fire trucks and scrap there really isn't much of a market for them.

Ditto on the 8.2 advice!! They're a pretty good anchor for the end of your dock, but that's about all. They tend to grenade ALOT and are anything but fuel efficient from what I've seen. Dad bought a stock truck with one in it in '83, and I cringe every time I start it. It's got like 39,000 on it now, and I know it's a time bomb. Unfortunately, the whole setup isn't worth what a good stock trailer is now....

Hey John if you ever get in a bind over that 8 screw I've got a shop manual for them. I've also got the tooling to set the injecter heights. You can imagineer the rest of the specialty stuff but the injecter tools are a must have. I'd be happy to loan 'em to ya as long as you send them back.

Those 6.2's would bolt right into my 80 chevy pickup right? Its got a 350 in it right now.

I could always sell the 350 and recoup some of my cost from the diesel then.

They will bolt up but they are military and you will need civilian exhaust manifolds, pulleys and a few other small bits.

The military HmmVee manifolds are kind of like tube shorty headers and they take up way too much room to fit in a pickup.

Let me look..I may have some civvie manifolds for a 6.2.

You also need all the pulleys and maybe the water pump. The Hummer engine has a huge stack of pulleys for the 24 volt dynamo they use. There was a couple other things too but I'll have to ask him. Torque convertor for sure and the flex plate, you'll need those. He started to put one in a late 70s Chevy 4x4 and it never got finished for some reason.

I can deal with making accessories fit on the engine.

Do they make a clutch flywheel for these motors?

Was thinking about putting a 4 speed tranny behind it for now.

Then possibly going with a 5 speed in the future.

As long as he would be willing to let me dial in, I could fix most of his problems.

Yes they did put a stickshift on them. I don't think he has a computer on line right now. He uses other people's.
