I got this 58 and 60 F100 pickups last spring and have been itching to get started. I would not start that project until the hotrod was done and it now is. So also I have been giving a lot of thought to the direction of the build. At first I thought about a Crown Vic front frame stub and the 302 I have. Then lately I got to thinking I should put an Aerostar front suspension because I could keep the stock frame, much easier. So I am under my Aeorstar measuring and get to thinking, why not use an Aerostar all wheel drive front and make it a nice low 4x4. You see this will be my daily driver and I want it low for easy access to stuff in the back, not have to crawl up inside to fetch things. And good fuel mileage gets me to thinking a 4.6 mod engine. Then yesterday I come across a rolled Expedition for a nice price and think, hmmm that whole chassis would be nice, torsion bar front so I could lower it. Only thing is the Expedition is about 4" wider in the track. So that's as far as my train of thought has gone, except I suppose the rear frame on the Expedition is humped up so a bed won't set over it.
Frame swaps generally turn out looking like ass but I might be able to pull it off. Then again that good used 292 I can get for $100, go through the stock brakes and have a driver might still be the best way to go.

Me, I'd be leaning toward that used 292 and going thru the brakes. I've never done any research on those trucks but maybe there's a way to swap over to front discs.

I have a friend who has swapped the 84-91 Crown Vic front stubs into them and has one in his shop right now he is doing it to. You end up with modern front suspension/steering but it's quite a bit of work. I did a bit more research on the Expedition and it's wheel base is 119 compared to 116 on the long wheelbase F100. Plus you have all that ABS crap to deal with and the extra width, probably more of a project than I want. I think I will go the easiest route on the 60 model and just make a driver out of it. It has a nice tight front end and steering. but will need a windshield and both side glass.
Also at the same junkyard I found several more 57-60 pickups including a big window and a couple shortbeds. None of them are any where near complete and he said he would sell me a couple for cheap. So maybe for more of a long range project I might get a short bed and frame, the big window cab and go back to the Aerostar front end idea. That way I can take my time accumulating parts for cheap/free.

there was a guy on fordicashun that did the crown vic front end swap--was a pretty simple swap--think he put a diesel in it iirc--if i knew then what i know now--my 72 would still have a 360 in it and i would have been driving it the last 13 yrs--where is that acme self ass kicking machine My next project. or "Churning gears with a couple bad cogs" 301330 -- but things happen the way they happen and that's that

do the 292--and enjoy it while ya gather parts and pieces---on the other hand i been thinking about a gasser front end for the 72 affraid

sounds like a fun project either way.

The ABS system isnt that much to toss. Just remove the ABS motor and hook it up to the master cylinder.

    pretty simple that way.

How about an Explorer? 95 to 01 have the 8.8 rear end, the track width is similar to the bumps at least. of course you'll have to elongate the frame rails, not a problem with your welding skills.
this guy at the middle of the page used a newer (03 i think)explorer. http://flashbackf100s.com/customers_page

did a rough measurement comparing 72 f100 frame width (34 inch outside frame rail to outside frame rail) and a 75 nova--it is close enough to make it work, regarding a front end swap--so most of the gm products -camaro, nova, firebird etc would be likely candidates--all those f1 cats been doing it for years--oh the blasphemy My next project. or "Churning gears with a couple bad cogs" 301330

Yeah, been looking into the Exploder. Ifn I could find one with a V8, that would be cool. Funny thing is how a project that starts out simple in your head, snowballs into such a major deal.
I'm backing it up a little. Still thinking Aerostar front, stock frame, Exploder rear end and the 302 I already have. Keep it on the cheap. Probably flip the front leaf spring hanger, maybe a little C notch, to get the rear end down. My plan is to just leave the patina on this truck...but, I might also start collecting the parts to do a shortbed big window, do it up on an Exploder and make it a nice one, paint and all. I'd like to spend the time to find all Merc trimmings and make it a 57 front. My dream truck.

Pictures were taken by the guy I bought them from, about 250 miles from here. Deal changed when we got there and nothing else was for sale. Muddles up deal where a scrapper was hired to clean the place up and a third party was trying to help him and make a little by selling odd the stuff. I paid way too much for this junk, going by pictures only, thought I was buying shortbeds, turned out to be long beds and the extra pair of doors are complete junk. With fuel and all I ended up with $1200 and a day of my time getting them home. And I'd already sent $500 down, he wouldn't give it back or let me take just one truck, so I kept my word, what else can a guy do.
