Need help, ford tranny interchange Empty Need help, ford tranny interchange

    Post by willowbilly3 Sat Nov 24, 2012 5:16 am

OK, so I have determined that the 2000 Econoline has a 4R70W tranny. Can I get one from behind any rwd mod motor, like a 4.6 crown vic of similiar year?
I have went through pages of searches and came up with nothing on swaps other than the cop cars seem to not interchange with the non-cop cars. Any help?

    4R70W

A revised version of the AODE was released in 1993 with the Lincoln Mark VIII. Compared to the AODE, it has lower 1st and 2nd gear ratios for better take-off acceleration and was designed for better gearset strength. On vehicles powered by a 5.4 L V8, a stronger gearset is used than in normal duty 4R70Ws. In 1998, due to durability concerns, the intermediate one-way roller clutch was replaced with a mechanical diode providing extra holding capacity and longer service.

While there is speculation that the 70 can be multiplied by 10 to indicate the ft-lbs of torque this transmission is capable of handling including torque converter multiplication, (i.e. 700 ft-lbs of torque), there is no reliable source indicating this. In fact a Ford document stated that the 2003 "Expedition's 4R70W transmission is rated to handle up to 506 foot-pounds of torque, which provides a large performance cushion beyond the peak torque rating of Expedition's largest available engine." http://media.ford.com/products/presskit_display.cfm?vehicle_id=548&press_subsection_id=423&make_id=92 . It is more plausible that the number indicates the torque handling capability in N-m, as 506 ft-lbs converts to 686 N-m which could be rounded to 700 N-m. The "70" may also refer to the transmission's torque capacity after torque converter multiplication which occurs at low rpm's when the torque converter is more "elastic". 4R70W stands for 4 gears, Rearwheeldrive, 70 is a measurement of horsepower and Wide gear ratio compared to the AODE.

    The gear ratios are: 1st: 2.84 :1 2nd: 1.55 :1 3rd: 1.00 :1 4th: 0.70 :1 Rev: 2.23 :1

    Applications:

    1993–1998 Lincoln Mark VIII
    1993–2003 Ford F-Series
    1994–1997 Ford Thunderbird
    1995–2004 Ford Crown Victoria
    1996–2001 Ford Explorer
    1993–2004 Lincoln Town Car
    1994–1997 Mercury Cougar
    1995–2004 Mercury Grand Marquis
    2003 Mercury Marauder
    1997–2004 Ford Expedition
    1997–2001 Mercury Mountaineer
    1996–2004 Ford Mustang

Have ya tried going to car-part.com ?

Its tied into most of the bigger junkyards and can show ya what they have for sale and will also show other models they have pulled from.

    Worth a try.

Otherwise if you know of someone with a Mitchell interchange manual that would definitely tell ya what will go and not go

spart took the words away from me, car-part.com very much tells you what fits what, and in this case seems like the only option would be a trans from an e250.
reason being that different gear ratios are used depending on the application and these being computer controlled transmissions if you install one with the wrong ratios the puter will interpret it as gear slippage thus triggering a code and going into limp mode. don't ask me how i know .
sorry i can't be more eloquent because a lack of eloquence condition i suffer from.

I found the same info you posted JD. Also went on car-parts-com and found one in RC with 150,000 for $400. Seems 2000 Econoline is the only application, no others. I don't have a problem buying a tranny but one with the same miles as my non-functioning one bothers me a little. Also I want to make sure it isn't an electrical issue before I shell out the cash..

after re-reading that wiki, i see that the "e" series is not mentioned

that "limp mode" has bitten me--old eagle--got a new computer, among other things--finally took the buckets out, saved the rims and new tires and let the junkers have it--i have, thankfully, forgotten the year and most all else about that deal--it was pre obd--had 2 separate computers(ecu's)--was gonna have to go to the dealers for some kinda flash--i flushed it instead Need help, ford tranny interchange 301330

sorry i can't be more help--i'll send positive waves your way

Reverse is fine but it seems to be trying to start out in 3rd. It also has a couple coils breaking down under load so it can barely get rolling, not enough to get up to speed but we did get it up to maybe 25 and no shifting or anything. Check engine light is on and I haven't ran a scan yet. No doubt a random misfire code. I'll dig into it a bit more this week. I don't know beens about the electronic controlled trannys, thinking maybe an electrical problem???

See if you can find a Mitchell manual for that year.

Check the wiring diagrams or the tranny section. Should show you the coils needed for the various gears, might even tell you how it shifts.

Then you could bypass the computer and put some switches on the connections and shift it by hand.

I wouldnt do it for very long but it would let you troubleshoot what aint workin
