Most of them were Mercedes that I ever looked in. You can build 100 mpg car with one.

Had to go with the mrs to Sioux Falls and while I had some free time, I went around to some of the reefer and truck parts places.

    Struck out everywhere.

The last place I went to knew what I was looking for, and had even did some of those installs. One I guess was in a Chevy LUV.

The fellow also said to get any useable power out of em you need a turbo.

He also mentioned those Mercedes engines like you said JB. Guess they were used in the earlier versions.

Sadly he hasnt had any of the kubota or yanmar engines for quite awhile.

    Sooooooooooo

How much horsepower, like maybe 25 tops? Seems pretty anemic for a full size pickup.

They have about 25 hp stock but the torque makes up for it I guess.

Most of em get a turbo which kicks em to at least 40 hp.

Followed a thread on 4btswaps where a fellow put on in his jeep and on the vids he posted it had pretty decent take off.

Wasnt a total speed demon but it wasnt a slouch either.

I could live with the 240 type take off if I could get 30-40 mpg with it, and be able to use old veggie oil.

If I knew where to find other engines Id look for one of those. Other than the ford chevy and dodge offerings of course.

I'd do some math and find out how much torque it takes to maintain a cruising speed. Then add about 25% or so, probably 150 ft/lbs or so..Then your going to need some serious torque multiplication to get the truck rolling. Something like a snowmobile uses so you can keep the engine in the torque peak, and still have a gear transmission too. It'll still have acceleration best measured with a sun dial.

I guess what i was thinking of was using the 240 engine as a baseline.

I am runnung the t-18 and a 3.70 gear set. Im hoping that would be enough.

guess, id like to get a diesel engine and not have to pay an arm and a leg for one ya know.

Ive heard that the isuzu 4 and 6 cyl diesels are pretty good as well.

I know kubota does sell bigger engines, but Im sure id be looking at 3 grand or more for one of those.

Wish I could find out where or how to get ahold of one of those cummins 4bt's that everyone seems to be gaga for.

Depending on what they came out of they came with sae, chevy, or ford bellhousings.

FOund a place that sells adapters for the sae to vehicle trannies. Im sure they aint cheap but they are out there.

The 4BT is a good way to go but expect to pay 3 grand for one, or more. Make sure and get one from a Ford so it has the Ford adapter, you don't want to start piecing together that stuff. My buddy put one in a 39 Internationa and I lined him up with a small block ZF 5 speed. It's a nice set up. Goes like stink and gets 25-30 mpg. I also like that little Nissan 3.3 six banger and they did turbo those too. Later Scouts could be had with one and a lot of them came in Maximas and I think it's the same engine they put in Town cars but they are rare as hell, only ever saw a couple of them for sale, maybe less than a thousand ever sold.
What about a 6.2? They run good and get pretty decent mileage. You should get well into the 20s with one with a 700 R4 tranny. And gthey are cheap to find.

But then I would be putting a chevy into a ford.

Im not against the 6.2 at all, except they are a bit gutless in stock form.
