    Been there done that.

    Didnt use a welder though.

    I had a teacher once that built a device that built up a charge like a camera flash and then dumped that voltage into the battery.

    Or, I used a variable power supply and set it to charge as much as it could without tripping till the voltage came up.

    That worked pretty good too.
