    so the original ford forum has a page on fb--i got on there a while back--the other day some youngster is asking about the 6's--i said he'd be pushing to get 16 mpg and they were one of the most durable engines made, and that a 302 set up right could do mid 20's easy--well some dick head more or less called me a liar by saying he had never seen a 302 do over 15 or so--i am so sick of head up their ass know it alls i may sell every damn ford i own-i've known some stupid chevy people but the majority of the idjits on that board just make me want to choke the livin shit out of them--feckin nincompoops

    that and some douche bag thinkin a 460 is gonna get 20mpg--maybe on a go kart frame with a gear vendors overdrive


    now back to the regular scheduled program lol!

    Don't let the bastads get ya down brothu. Seems the computer and internet forums kinda breed those sorts like some kind of fungus in a petrie dish.

    My take on the mileage. Circa 1980, I had an 80 E100, 300/C6 and pops had a 79 F-150, 300/4 speed. Both of those would get 19 but remember the speed limit was 55. If you pushed to 63-64, it dropped to 16. I've had 2 302 pickups. Tired 72 with one weak hole would do 13-15 and a nice 96 F-150 SC 2wd with AOD and 16-16 1/2 was bout it cruising freeway speeds, got 19 1/2 once across OK./Ka. with a tailwind. In a big car, 20 isn't hard, Lots of old Crown Vics and Mercs got mid 20s or better.
    About 1980 I had a neighbor with a 74 Merc, 460. He claimed it would do 20-21 hwy. and I heard of a few others about the same vintage. In a pickup, you'd have to spend some $$$ to get a 460 past 15.

    I was in a discussion recently on FTE, guy is asking about the gains from a 240 head on a 300. Couple guys were feeding the stupid pool. One guy has his purdied up 300 on an engine stand but claims it is a small block chevy killer (or so he thinks, never actually had it in anything yet). I politely exlpained that the most you could hog out a 300 head on a radical build might get you to 300 horse, better not tackle anything but a stock 305. He at least shut up. Then another one says he's put a 240 head on his econoline and is getting 28 mpg. I said I had to wave the bullchit flag on that. And with that the thread fell silent.

    I never had a 460, but my 429 would push 20 with a 2wd F150. Like JB says, remember this was when we had to run 55, and I had a 3.00 rear, so at 60mph, it wasn't turning 2 grand yet... and it had enough torque/hp to loaf along and do really well. That being said.... who has that sort of power at their disposal and doesn't use it??? Twisted Evil Usually I was down in the 10mpg or lower bracket... just a tiny little bitch 301330

    yeah--i should not let it trigger me--we have all been stupid about some things, but it seems that the level and length of the "stupidness" is getting higher and longer--there are so many factors and variables to what a particular grouping of components can/will/do produce--but there is still an acceptable average based on historical (not hysterical) datum-- i learned in the appraisal business, that any group of numbers or data can be manipulated and proven with enough parameter allowances to back up any claim ya wanna make--within 20 or 25 percent plus/minus--and then add in all the "secret" parts that slipped out of the factory and bingo--there ya go!!

    i would havta say the 429 was a much more efficient air pump than a 460--but that's just dumbass farmboy rational lol! (kinda think them ol shine runners would too)

    Worst mileage I ever got was in a new 86 f250 300 auto. 10 if I was lucky and it wouldn't pull a 4 horse trailer empty 60mph. I sold my 80 F350 dually 460 4 barrel to get it. It got about 14 empty and pulled anything I put behind it. But like John said when you have that much power its hard to keep your foot outta it. Real hard, lol

    nope--i think that anything is possible with the right engineering, gearing and money to do it----i should have just let it all slide right on by--but some days i am not as good of a human as i intend to be--and some days i am really perturbed by the levels of ignorance prevalent on this planet--sure never meant to hurt any feelings or anything of that nature---
