    Old trucks Empty Old trucks

    Post by willowbilly3 Fri Feb 24, 2012 7:33 am

    I'm thinking about buying a couple old pickups about 3 1/2 hours away. A 1958 and a 1960 Custom cab, shortbed Fords. Back in the 70s I drove the wheels off a 57 dually with a 312 and I've always wanted a shortbed pickup that body style. I'm not too hot on the front end of the 60 models but can xhange the grill and hood. I have a 71 motorhome with a good 302/auto and that would be a pretty easy swap. Or maybe the 425 out of the Torosaurus. Or even the 300 and ZF from the 92.
    They will pretty much stay on the back burner until the hotrod is on the road though (hopefully this summer but I say that every year).
    Anyway my old 92 F-250 has done me well but I need a better towing rig and If I get a diesel dually like I want, then I need a little shop truck for running around town and I have my mind set on something old/cool.
    I'll try to get some pics hosted later, beware there are short cab scouts in the picture and we all know there is an unmentioned member who is trying to get off the binder addiction.

    How about a front wheel drive 58 short bed? Swapping the torosaurus into it

    I was thinking that. I'll have to do some measuring to see if it can all fit. Those Toro's have some pretty serious front overhang.

    sounds like a plan--i like those orphaned body styles--saw a nice one on cl the other day--looks like i will ride the binder again--tired of wasting time with potential "buyers"

    Well, I pulled the trigger on 'em last night, sent the guy half down. I'm not sure when I'll get over there, could be a couple weeks and it could be April/May depending on the spring storms.
    More than likely the one I get running will have the 302 auto from the 71 motorhome. Speedway sells a crossmember pretty cheap that will mount the engine. Then it's just brakes and steering to have it a driver, do the rest as time permits.

    That top pic looks like it has a Volkswagon "Thing" in front of it.
    Always thought that would be a fun vehicle. Maybe the Toro in the back of it?
    Just do 60 in reverse

    Still kickin' myself for not grabbing a '60 Merc short dually at a dispersal sale a couple of years ago. Did take out three other project/parts trucks though. At least a merc tailgate (if I ever find one for you) won't be as hard to ship as a complete truck...

    Update;
    I went to the dmv (County Treasurer here) and ask what I needed to get form the guy to get titles. Last time I ask a couple years ago they could do it on a bill of sale with an affidavit. Well, due to people abusing that process, now only the landowner where they set can apply using that process. 2 options, park them on my sister or nephews land and let them initiate the at process, or just get receipts for everything (calling them parts) and do a built vehicle. That's the one where you have to save every receipt and then pay tax on all of it.

    it's all about the taxes---and the abuse thing--that's the story they use for anything they want more control over

    Well, crap. After a 4 hour drive we get down there and both trucks turn out to be long beds and the guy claims he never said they were short beds (well maybe he didn't but I said it enough times in our phone conversations that he should have said something). Since I sent half down, I offered to just take the yellow 60 model and forget the rest of the deal but they wouldn't do that because they had already paid the landowner. So I could just say screw it and come home empty, loose my $500 down and the $200 for fuel or give them the other 5 bills and keep my end of the deal. What the hell can a guy do? I brought the trucks home. The yellow one is in pretty decent shape except for the cab corners. The blue 58 is pretty rough but has most of the parts I need for the yellow one and I can probably recover $500 in ebay and scrap iron.
