My son's a/c has not worked in a month. Its kind of hard to help him with it when he's 70 miles away.
He came to town last night to go see his mom and me. He stopped by here and I looked at it.
We could'nt get the clutch to kick in so we checked 2 fuses to the clutch and they were good
Then we pulled and at looked at one relay and one diode. I don't know how to check those.
Pulled the power plug to the comp. and no voltage to the plug
Then I remembered if it was low on freon I had to jump the low pressure switch at the accumalater tank
I did that and we had 12v to the plug on the comp.
put the plug back on the comp and it would not engage even with power
While watching the center of the clutch to see if it had kicked in
I noticed what looked like metal powder or fine shavings
That confirmed it for me, the clutch is out and needs a new one
He still may have a freon leak but I could find no evidence of one. Of course it could have a leak at the evap. coil.
At least you don''t have to remove the freon lines from it to replace the clutch
remove the serp. belt unbolt the comp. and it has enough lines to stand it straight up to pull the clutch
I found 2 online last night for $200. Any one know how to beat that price? Thanks guys

where did you shop??? lately, my pricing forays have brought me to rock auto--even after the freight it is still a big savings

and if you don't have one you will more than likely need whatever special tool is specific to that make and model--i think you can prob rent from your fav parts house

good luck--summer is upon us and no time to be without ac--we made 85 the other day--i broke a sweat--i hate it when that happens--good thing i don't have a job, cuz ya gotta fill out the extra "sweat" report 03 F150 A/C clutch V6 301330

Charles--we took a clutch apart and wire brushed all the built up powder off---ran like a new one--this was on a 90 something gm pickup--got to be close or similar to a ford clutch

cool---we just ordered new shocks for the van, julie's pontiac and the 95 olds rear--all monroe-buy 4 and get a rebate for the price of 1--the 2 for the 95 were 5 dollars each--wholesaler closeout--with shipping and not including the rebate, the savings came to 100 and some change--i went whole hawg and got the coil overs for front and rear for each on the van and pontiac--55 per front pair and 92 per rear pair--kinda figure it'll be the final set on each of them and i can use them on other rigs we have if we take something out of service--locally the price was 24 bux higher on the front pairs and 32 bux higher on the rears--the rears for the 95 olds were 5 and change each with the shipping for those 2 at 11 bux --the kicker was the coil overs were only around 5 dollars higher each than the top of the line sensa trac

in the past i have tried to stay with kyb--which they offered at a good price--just not good enuff this time--lol

I've been on rock auto a few times and it seems like I can always get the part local for the same price or less than rock auto.

I have yet to find where rock was cheap enough on price with the shipping to have me buy from them.

The cheapest Ive seen them vs local stores, has been about 5 bux, and add shipping, and well it just dont pay.

I have used those sensatracs and don't like them. They have a little wash-by groove right in the middle to make them softer and they just feel like worn out shocks to me.

oops--i guess i will be able to either agree or disagree now on the monroes--i hadn't put a monroe shock on anything in 15 yrs--since i found out about kyb that has been my shock of choice---they have got to be better than the worn out junk on the vehicles right now--so it will be an improvement, even if it's not exactly the best choice---that is good info-JB
