Found an ad in the local farmers paper for a 471 detroit engine for parts. The feller wants 150 bux for it.

Would it be worth it to even call the guy? What usually goes bad on these and would it fit into either a bump truck or my 52 chevy 2 ton?

You could haul it in a pickup. Not sure what "for parts" means but that kinda sounds like not feasable to rebuilde.

Im assuming its worn out at the very least.

    Might be missing stuff.

Would have to call on it, but dont want to waste the long distance call if it aint worth it.

was thinking if it was worth anything and fairly easy and not to expensive to rebuild Id consider putting it in my 52 cheby to replace the old 235

You can find decent running ones pretty cheap. My neighbor had a GMC cabover with a V6-Detroit (not sure if it was a 53 or 71) Good running truck with Allison tranny. He tried for a couple years to get a grand for it and eventually took it to auction and got $1500.

Youd be better off finding a whole donor vehicle. It can run you ragged and cost mucho $$$$ trying to piece something together. Look at school buses for sale, often you can get a good running one for a lot less than the drive train will cost, and you get to hear it run first. Those 8 piont something Detroit V8 fuel mizer engines are cheap. I know they are a throw away but cheap and if it's a good runner, how much are you going to use it anyway. then you have the tanks and everything you need.

If it were put into the old cheby it would be intermittent at best.

Would definitely have to change the rear gears, cause even high range is 6.3 and I know the diesels dont like to run much over 2500 rpm.
And I dont think I could squeeze a big old 318/350 detroit in between the fenders of that old cheby.

Hear that a 350 gasser is a tight squeeze.

    Just a thought was all.

    No rush.

Spart that 4-71 is gonna be more hassle than it's worth. First up it's considerably heavier than a 235. Also bulkier. Back in the day you could overhaul a 2 stroke Detroit for about $100 per hole (cylinder). Today the numbers run around $1000 per hole. If you're set on a diesel I'd look for a rotted out Dodge with a 12 valve rattle can or even better an old bread truck with a 4 banger Cummins. Both are way easier swaps and much more drivable. Not really set on diesel yet.

Would love to have a couple for the cheby 4x4 and the bump truck but I dont have the cash for em right now.

Just was more of a thinking out loud kinda thing on this detroit more than anything.

Clay--that's good info on rebuilds--got any numbers for gas engines--bearing in mind the performance factor can scatter them all over the chart

Not off the top of my noggin JD. I'd need some specifics to get numbers.
