We had to put down a yearling filly today. Morgan Frisan cross. She collicked real bad, twisted gut I suppose. The vet came out and worked on her for a while and talked about the options. One of which is spend $5000 on surgery and she'll probably die anyway. Sis has been to that movie a couple times, no go.
Then we had to haul her to the land fill so some animals don't eat her and get poisoned by the sleepy bye drug..

that's a downer---farm and ranch life is pretty blunt that way--very reason i sold a horse--one died, in the spring, sold the other one and got my first motorcycle--they are easier to part with

Sorry to hear that!! Colic is a horrible thing, and when the gut twists, it's better to just put them out of their misery. Hard to do, but the best thing by far.

Its been a 20+ years since I,ve owned a horse and a lot longer since I,ve had a colt or yearling. Seems like on colts if we suspected they had colic and were down with it we would hold a cup full of turpentine on their navel. Am I remembering that right.

This little filly probably coliced late in the evening. By morning she was a mess, had been down and struggling. She was wringing wet with sweat and pretty dehydrated.
We had a problem with her a 2-3 months ago. She was born with a umbilcal hernia. No biggy, they usually go away I guess but one day she was pretty sick and a gut had dropped down in there. The local vet got it back and sis took her in and had them fix it. We're thinking there was a restriction or some scar tissue from that.

    That just sucks big time.

At least it was fairly quick and she didnt have to suffer for a long time.
