I went and looked at another 300 today, might get it. It's a 1980 F150 2wd. 300-6 with the toploader 4 speed (4th overdrive) It also has A/C. The cab bottoms are rusty and it has some damage on one front fender. I guess he wants $350, be worth it if it runs good and the A/C works.

did you ever get those rotors or spindles for the 89??

i am trying to make contact with a seller of an 89 f250--looks to be fairly complete--says the 5 sp bell housing is cracked

what yr did they go to the dual exhaust on the 300????

make sure to look over that 4 speed.

If its anything but the one where the shifter goes into the top of the tranny, watch out. They dont make parts for the other style of shifter(s)

Also Ive heard that the split between 2nd and 3rd is HUGE. Over rev in 2nd and lug in 3rd

It's the same tranny as the car toploader, basically. The one with the side linkage. I think you could still get an aftermarket shifter, like a Hurst or Mr' gasket.
I have one of those trannys with the shifter in the top too. Yeah, I know the split isn't real good on the gears. Basically what they did was use third as overdrive and flip the one shift lever upside down. Also those trucks of that vintage had too tall of gears and most of them could barely pull themselves on flat ground in 4th. I drove one brand new, it had the 255 V8. I shifted into 4th at 60, mashed the gas to the floor and 1 1/2 miles later on flat ground, it was still going 60. 3.00 rear I think.

I guess the one linkage I was thinking of was the one that came between the one you described and the top loaded one.

Had some sort of funky side shifter that was specific to that style and wasnt very good from the start.

Those 255's were just junk from the start, a destroked 302 and smog shit up the ass.

i never heard of the 255--guess that's a good thing

my dad had an 83 or 84 with 300 6 and that pos trans & rear gear combo--their driveway was a 45 degree angle about 125 ft long---it was a dragstrip type launch to get the thing to the street every time--come to find out that one of the more serious mistakes by ford was too thin flywheel & a pos pressure plate/clutch combo from the factory

the other thing i can attest to is without a true 5 sp--a clutch and 3.25 or less gear ratio is not gonna take off very smooth--no matter what your mill is

The 255 was a small block they only produced a couple years and not many of them were made.
I did get all the brake parts for my F250, except it could use new calipers, they drag a little.

cool--i haven't got a response back---if i got it i would not need any of the front parts--i want the 300 & the rear end stuff
