Thanksgiving Deer Hunting Empty Thanksgiving Deer Hunting

    Post by CJ,s 67 F100 Fri Dec 03, 2010 10:30 am

OK who went hunting over the holiday? I got a doe and a spike. Two turkey and a coyote.
Anyone have a good coyote recipe? They still taste like $hit. LOL
I missed 2 doe, neck shots at 285yds. Guess I,m getting old lol
I wanted 2-3 100# pigs but they never come in when you want one
No one wants to shoot the doe and spikes.
A game biologist told us to harvest a lot of doe and all the spikes.
We agreed to not shoot any buck under 10pts.
This is our second year so we will see if we can grow some good bucks in 4-5 years.

The indians eat dog, they might have a recipe but I would have to be damned hungry to try it, lol. Those Texas deer are great eating, a little on the puny side tho. There's alittle yearling white tail in my yard every night, I'm thinking about busting him with my 17. Turkeys are epidemic here, sis across the road has 100 in her yard all the time. I think I am going to pop a couple smaller ones and see how they smoke in the Brinkman.

If you want the best Tasting turkey around, do the beer butt turkey on the smoker
I spray him with olive oil (and it has to be olive oil) then sprinkle on Lowrys
and Garlic powder. You have to violate the turkey with a tall Boy beer.
I like to use charcoal in my little Brinkman smoker and ad some pecan wood.
We have done it at our deer lease using all Mesquite and its just too much smoke.
If ya'll like his one ( and you will ) I'll give up my sugar cured smoked ham recipe

They have the seasons all screwed up here...for deer and elk, you only get to take a female the first week of season...unless you're under 15, and then you can shoot whatever... the rest of us have to shoot a browtine'd bull or buck, so no young ones, and no doe's or cows. So the results are... we have a herd of about 50-75 elk that come in to the haystack and eat... mostly cows or calves, and young bulls... but the big bulls (as usual) stay out of sight. Same with the deer. Their theory is that one male can service so many females...well, that's true, but the damned females eat as much as any!!!!

Around here farmers can shoot them by claiming crop damage. The farmer's family can pop them also if the farmer doesn't hunt. There are locals that eat venison pretty much year round.

If I liked wild meat, it'd be tempting! Beef's too easy and I have enough of a personal grudge against cows that I really enjoy seeing one on my plate! My best friend is a game warden, so gotta behave a little. haha...

i can relate to the cow thing

my gramps was tight with the game warden--he was known for stocking private ponds--the fish came from various local rivers--they had coffee every morning--gramps was the courthouse maintenance guy--i remember some of the rather convoluted conversations--i also remember a couple of times when the warden snuck up on us in his canoe, he just wanted to know if gramps needed help with the seine, since i was kinda light in the ass those days

Perry's good about calling before he comes out... he knows about the wolves around here and is a good guy....but I don't wanna put him in a bad place. He has a job, and I'd feel terrible about making him do it. The other game warden (Frank) lives only a few miles from here, and he's also got cattle...great guy again..and I'd like to stay on the "right" side of them. lol! But what they DON'T know........

I ain't actually poached anything since I was a kid, but I ain't above it either. I don't eat much beef that doesn't come from my sisters, don't eat that feedlot stuff much since it all gets ral-grow and is fed genetically engineered corn. I would like to get an elk but ain't a legal resident. Antelope is pretty good eatin and we have plenty of those. You just have to know how to harvest one right. Lots of people won't eat it because they had bad experiences. I tell them a cow wouldn't be fit to eat either if you chased it around, then gut shot it.

After spending Christmas day inside my gf was getting cabin fever and suggested we drive to my deer processer in Tye Tx. just the other side of Dyess AFB in Abilene and pickup my two deer. We left at 6:30 am yesterday and returned home with the meat at 2pm.
Its a 450 mile round trip, stopped to eat breakfast, lunch and once to gas up.. Made a lot better time than I thought I would. Then my son came by and got half the meat LOL
