new life for the travelall Empty new life for the travelall

Post by Admin Mon Feb 07, 2011 11:04 am

after this ice, i have decided to revive the 75 t'all

don't have the bucks to re-build an ihc engine,so i am going to transplant a 302 c4 i have on hand--my original plan was to take the 351 out of the 89 1 ton and ditch the 1 ton--but it makes a fine tool box and it rolls under it's own power

research tells me i will give up some hp, very little torque and a good bit of weight

it's a divorced transfer so no sweat there

i was going to have to build motor mounts no matter what engine i put in there--that's the main reason it has been sitting & rotting

or i may call the metal buyers and sell them the whole back yard new life for the travelall 301330

    LOL
    Funny one.

Hey do you happen to have any 6 bolt 4x4 cheby rims you could take some measurements off of?

Hell it might even be stamped into the rim already.

    Looking for the rim width.

Id check mine, but they are buried for the next 3 months yet.

Depends on how you are going to use it but I'd think the 302 might be a little lacking for grunt. But you do have low range.

    i hear ya JB

i was reviewing my past power needs--i think i hauled one load with the 392 and had a little issue with--that load was an overdose on the trailer & truck--i should be under the jail for even roading that one

so figuring for a dog hauler and 4wd weather the 302 would probably suffice--i don't see any serious off roading in my near future and the "far" future is not a factor new life for the travelall 301330

i have a 345--runner/mild oil usage--will have to retro fit the old wishbone mounts to use it--and that is probably what i will do

either way--old red shall ride again Very Happy

and just for grins here is the datum

    345

    182 bhp @ 3800 rpm

    303 ft lbs torque @ 2000 rpm

    http://www.carfolio.com/specifications/models/car/?car=56980

    302

    302
    # Produced in 1968

    # Cast iron crankshaft

    # forged rods

    # cast pistons

    # hydraulic camshaft

    # available with 2 or 4 barrell carburator

    # horsepower varied from 210 to 230 depending on carburator.

    # Standard 302 was equipped with 2 barrel from 1969 to 1983.

The most common form of this engine used a two-barrel carburetor, initially with 9.5:1 compression. It had hydraulic lifters and valves of 1.773 in (45 mm) (intake) and 1.442 in (36.6 mm) (exhaust), and was rated (SAE gross) at 220 hp (164 kW) @ 4600 rpm and 300 lb·ft (407 N·m) @ 2600 rpm. Optional was a four-barrel version rated at 250 hp (186 kW) @ 4800 rpm.

i do not mistake the longevity of a binder engine vrs a 302, but i wouldn't sacrifice much power wise :?:

250hp might be a typo. Most were 195 for the 2 bbl and 220 for the 4 bbl IIRC, except the HiPo which was a considerably different rascal at 271hp.

I think the 302 will do everything you need to do except pull 10,000#
But then you have the 1 Ton for that

The reason for the big drop between 71 and 72 is how they measured the output.

I believe before 72 they measured it right at the flywheel with nothing else hooked up to the engine.

After 72 they hooked up all the accessories (ie water pump alternator) and then measured it from a different spot.

    Thus the lower ratings.

It'll be easier to drag that 302 closer right now in the snow on a sled than it will when it gets 100 and ya gotta roll it over closer new life for the travelall 301330
