building a fuel tank??? Empty building a fuel tank???

ok--so i want to make one to go under the tool box in the 72--the old guy that owned it had a little home built box right behind the driver in the bed--there is a rusted out hole in the bed---so--i am thinking--a good place for the sump and outlet

the welding is the tricky part--it will all be hidden(a little bird shit welding will not be seen--lol), so i guess air pressure for the leak test??? sprayed down with soap bubbles(like a gas line test--natural/lp)

i would get 1 sheet preformed in a u bend--then have a flat bottomed v from 1/2 way in towards the outlet--2 rectangle end pieces and a filler neck--that would minimize the long run welds

    suggestions???

If they're good, they'll be able to bend the metal all the way around, then you'll have ONE seam on the sides, and the ends will have to be welded. We build fuel tanks that way all the time for planes. I pressurize them to about 2psi. Put a balloon over the filler neck and put pressure in the outlet...then use the soapy water like you were saying. Dish soap seems to work best for me. I usually try to get a slight bend just where you'll attach the next plate... like a 20* bend, about 1/8" in, that way it gives lots of area to weld, and offers just a little bit of strength to the areas near the weld as well.

    Sounds good to me.

I have two add on tanks on my bump and they are basically welded boxes.

dont think you would need to pressure test it, unless your gonna run an efi type setup.

don't ever underestimate the potential of a beer keg... as a fuel tank and not the motivation to build one.
